I'm not sure about the military, but in civilian life, if someone approaches you aggressively and gets in your face, that's definitely a clear cut case of self defense if you hit them first.

Yeah it seems ludicrous in that situation (when someone goes out of their way to get in your face and threaten you) to have to wait for the inevitable attack before defending yourself.
