But American sports fans will watch anything they can drink to in mid-Summer

Yeah, no. What "American sports fans" are you referring to? I sure as hell don't give a damn about the World Cup unless the USA is in it. In fact, the only people I know that do are the uber soccer fans that follow European soccer just as hard as they do the NFL or college football.

The World Cup, and Soccer in general, are not made for the US Sports fan who has an attention span of 10 seconds. And with no vested interest in it, I doubt Joe Blow is going to turn on a soccer game because he can "drink to it".

I'm continually amazed by the strong opinions held by people who have no fricking clue what they're talking about. Ok dude, when the World Cup is trouncing the shite out of mid-Summer MLB and everything else next year, be sure to revisit this topic.

The only soccer team I follow is FC Dallas from MLS but I still like watching the World Cup. You don't have to be an uber soccer fan that knows everything to appreciate what an awesome event it is.

Using this logic, there should be almost no one watching the World Cup coverage after the Us team gets knocked out. Should be pretty easy to see the trends there based on past ratings.

The people that watch the World Cu aren't watching for the US. They're watching for the big names that play for other countries. Will there be a dip next year with team USA out, most likely. Will it be as huge as OP and others are insinuating, highly doubtful.
