Interesting. So Rein would have had to adapt to a new offense almost from the beginning. I wonder what that would have looked like.

One of two things would've happened.

Like Stovall, he'd have had to junk the Veer.

Or he'd have had to find personnel who could run it effectively.

As I said in my OP...nobody will ever know.

Fast-forwarding a bit -- I've always wondered how Bill Arnsparger managed to take over a 4-7 team and go 8-2-1 (regular season) in his first year. I know we picked up Hilliard and Martin in '84, but that doesn't really seem like enough for such a dramatic turnaround.

Arnsparger -- now HE was the Saban of the 80s.

Another of the what could have beens the coaching search was between Rein and Bobby Bowden. Bowden said no and signed a new deal with FSU.

To me the quote that says it all was by Woody Hayes saying "Out of all his assistants he thought Rein would have the most success."

Rein was 34

Some of Hayes Assistants
Holtz
Schembechler
Arnsparger
Parsaghian
Dick LeBeau
