He didn’t just throw them under the bus, he gave up on an entire position group.
He didn’t say they were in a slump.
He didn’t say that they were working hard to fix it.
He just said wait until next year.
It was the closest he could come to kicking them off of the team without actually doing it.

Perfect synopsis. Its unfathomable to me that he thinks these comments are acceptable.
He basically said "our current kickers are horrible, they are not capable of getting better, so we're screwed until next year."
