Kubrick actors often have cold performances, especially if they're not extremely talented like George C Scott or Jack Nicholson.
I also think O'Neal was kind of thrust on the film because it wouldn't get made without a big star (which O'Neal was in 1975). I don't think Kubrick had him as his first choice.
