In most cases, the mother cares for the children more than the father even if they are both working. That's usually why mother's receive custody in a divorce.

That's def the way it was with the rednecks I grew up around. Women worked, cooked, did laundry, did dishes, grocery shopped, and handled home work.
Frank went to work and came home and drank beer on the couch and bitched that she wasn't doing enough.

Seriously though, the divorce process with laws in regards to custody and compensation really needs to be changed up a lot.
