when he says he's taking out long 2s I think he means he wants to take out shots that have a higher risk with little reward.
so instead of having a heel on the 3 point line, take a step back and shoot or pass the ball/drive to try to get a higher percentage shot. they aren't taking jump shots out of their offense

This is correct. He wasn't necessarily talking about midrange shots.
He was talking about long 2s, which are pretty much the worst shot in all of basketball.
