I don't think that's true. Why would the owners go to Trump on this issue instead of going to Roger Goodell, who actually works for the owners? If enough owners wanted the league to put a stop to the protests, Goodell would be forced to act. All Goodell would have to do was have the league office send a memo to all teams that anthem protests were negatively affecting the NFL's perception in the eyes of fans/sponsors and the league was banning on-field protests and would fine or suspend players who continued to protest.

We know some owners went to Trump. So the question is, why? What did they hope to gain? Well, what did Trump do about it? Trump went and told the fans to make their voices heard. So what logical explanation is there for all this?

The NFL has been veering left for a while. There is no way the NFL as a whole would be able to come to a consensus on this. If owners started firing players over it, the NFLPA would be bringing lawsuits. I am betting that some owners realized realized that the only people with the power to get the message across was the fans since that is where the money comes from. Owners know the golden rule better than most. They probably felt it was the only way to save the league long term, by dealing with it all now and moving on instead of letting this drag out for years slowly building.

Of course it's not. The Twitter twit thinks these owners can just walk up to a large group of players and say "you're fired!".

Goodell would be throwing a nuke into a campfire if he did that
