Trump claims some NFL owners told him they were essentially afraid of the players and felt they "needed to do something" but for some reason couldn't. This would make sense given that Trump's first statement was, "wouldn't you like to see an 'owner'...."

IMO, it is looking like the owners knew the fans wouldn't support this and they talked Trump into stoking the fire so that the players hear directly from the fans that the fans will not support disrespecting symbols of universal freedom and tolerance. I think the owners tried to get the message through to the players last year but the players' egos felt they owned the fans and not the other way around.

If this is what is going down, well done you few owners.

President Trump continued the war against NFL players not standing for the national anthem Thursday, declaring that NFL team owners need to stop pandering to their players and being afraid of them.

Trump claimed that NFL owners have previously told him in private that they’re in “a situation where they have to do something.”

Trump told “Fox and Friends” host Pete Hegseth “I think they’re afraid of their players, if you want to know the truth, and I think it’s disgraceful.”

“They’ve got to be tough, and they’ve got to be smart.” the President continued, adding that “most people” are with him on the issue and the NFL is “in a box”.

Describing the players refusing to stand for the anthem, Trump said it is a a “terrible thing.”

“The NFL cannot disrespect our country. They cannot disrespect our flag or our national anthem, and they can’t have people sitting down or kneeling down during our national anthem,” he said.

“When it comes to the respect of our nation, when it comes to the respect of our anthem and our flag — they have no choice. You have to have people stand with respect,” Trump concluded.

These billionaires are more afraid of the players than their own customers? Well if they are that stupid then they deserve to lose their business.

If true, then these owners are a bunch of spineless pussies.

I don't understand why they don't tell the players that everyone that doesn't stand will get a $50k fine that will go to a police charity.

I don't think that's true. Why would the owners go to Trump on this issue instead of going to Roger Goodell, who actually works for the owners? If enough owners wanted the league to put a stop to the protests, Goodell would be forced to act. All Goodell would have to do was have the league office send a memo to all teams that anthem protests were negatively affecting the NFL's perception in the eyes of fans/sponsors and the league was banning on-field protests and would fine or suspend players who continued to protest.

1) Owners "hire" Trump to put an end to this kneeling bullshite.

2) Trump formulates a plan of action and gets to work

3) End result: Players AND owners are kneeling.

Trump does not have a great track record when it comes to describing the details of a private conversations.

But anyways, there were only about 5 players from 4 teams who had protested during the first few weeks. Those teams were: Seattle, San Francisco, Kansas City, and Oakland. So those would be the only owners who should have any current concern, and 3 of those teams are in 2 of the most left leaning areas of the country.

So the "several owners told me they are afraid" comment doesn't seem very plausible.

Yeah I'm not really buying this.

They had to know there would be this reaction where they would double down as an "F U" to Trump.

If that's the case, these people really have no clue the mentality they are dealing with.

TIN FOIL HAT ALERT: Trump is helping his billionaire friends purposefully drive down ratings, so in the short term, they lose money. This causes the owners?teams to be forced to signing cheaper contracts and ultimately renegotiating the NFLPA agreement. Then, football returns to normal, profits skyrocket with the players getting a smaller share.

I hate it when he says idiotic stuff like this. They are private entity and don't have any obligation to be respectful of the flag, anthem, etc. I hope he's implying that "they can't do this and expect to it to turn out well", but he's so terrible with expressing what he really means, who knows (see "Muslim ban")?

That is about as likely as Schumer supporting obamacare repeal.

No, he's boxing them in. They want so badly to demonstrate that hes wrong but doing so would require them to cut the shite which would make trump look good. If they double down the perception is that trump is right and they're afraid

Also Goodell "facilitated" a meeting between players and coaches. So much for unity. The NFL is in defcon1 and they have no one with the ability to manage a public relations crisis

And they're waaaay out of their league with Trump
