I just picked up the foundation series by Isaac Asimov. There are multiple, but i just got the original / main three, Foundation, Foundation and Empire and Second Foundation.
Just finished the first one - really quick, easy sci-fi type reads at around 300 pages each. First one was very good and I usually gravitate more towards fantasy stuff. Really fast paced and gets a lot done in those 300 pages. Definitely recommend.

mostly fantasy suggestions here. I am going to recommend Scalazi - Old Man's War. It is an incredible book, especially for anyone over the age of 40.
every person I gave it to, loved reading it. Sci fi and non sci fi fans alike.
