Not trying to be a dick, I just really hate that book stores have blended what I consider two vastly different genres in to one.
If you're looking for more swords than lasers, I would recommend either The First Law Trilogy or The Gentlemen Bastard series as good introductions to Fantasy.

Fair enough. I just went with the book store heading. I really liked Red Rising, so maybe your refs are the way to go.
I do feel like a dumbass now in that I claimed to be a newb ( I still think I am), but I did read ASOIAF after the show came out. I really liked that too.
