It's not like we haven't been through this before.

Chris Jackson thought he was clever and thoughtful when he pulled this shite in the NBA like 15 years ago. The league suspended him, and worked out a deal where he would stand in respect but could close his eyes and pray. Why wouldn't that have worked now?

There are about 100 viable alternatives that don't involve pissing on paying customers

Because unlike the NBA thus rule wasn't bargained during collective bargaining in the NFL.
