I get how it happened. Even back in the earlier days, Jimmy was always an emotional guy. Jimmy, unlike the other late night hosts, is actually friends with many of his guests. It's why he's by far the best at doing skits with them.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are actually dear friends of Kimmel, sat at the same table during his wedding as Carolla, and has them all over on Sunday to watch the NFL. It's listening to people like Affleck, Damon, and his ex Sarah Silverman that converted him. He has been fairly openly nonpartisan until recently, and I think his son finally made him completely snap.

And it's hard to blame them. Carolla is exceptionally defiant with his opinions due to his shitty parents constantly demeaning him and won't let Hollywood break him. Kimmel though came up from a good and stable background and can be much more trusting than Carolla. If you know these two well, it makes perfect sense how they ended up in their respected positions.
