Some people are just too stupid to be left unsupervised. Sadly, some of them have been entrusted with educating our children.

quote:

A California high school is facing a backlash after administering an interactive mock slavery lesson to students.

In the activity at Whitney High School, 8th grade students played the part of slaves, with their hands bound with masking tape, CBS Los Angeles reported. The teachers played the part of the slave ship captains.

An explainer of the lesson plan was emailed to parents Sept. 5, describing it as a “simulation activity” looking to teach “students about the slave system in colonial America.” One parent posted a copy of the letter to Facebook.

It said the teachers would line the students up outside their classrooms, tie their wrists together with masking tape and make them lie on the ground inside a dark room while they watched a clip from the movie “Roots.”

It also said that the activity was meant to be a surprise because it was “more powerful” when it was something the students were "not prepared for.”

Sounds like the premise of an Onion article...sadly it isn't.

Not sure what to think on this one.

I think simulations are an extremely useful tool for people to gain true perspective.

Perhaps an abortion simulation would be accepted in sex-ed class.

holy shite, that's one twisted teacher...

you know, slavery was pretty horrifying when the basics were explained

you can't go anywhere
you work all the time
you don't get paid
you don't own anything
your wife and kids are not yours
you can be beaten, mutilated or killed
you are property.

I know how my daughter would react.

You want to tie me up? You want a quick kick in the nuts?

I wonder how many mock Continental Congress sessions debating the ratification of the Constitution these so called educators have held.

Wonder why they never simulate African tribes capturing other African tribes and selling them to white and Muslim slave traders for goods...hmmm

You mean in teaching about slavery they used a work of fiction?

Native Americans have been treated more poorly than any other population this country has ever seen, and to a large degree are still suffering. They have very little entitlement or whining coming from their side, even though they deserve more than any population. I have lots of respect for them, and admire their solidarity.

There was no on-board movies.

Seriously, our school used to have "Slave Auctions" to raise money. Every kid participiated - and teachers would bid on you and then you'd be their "slave for the day." Usually cleaning up classrooms. Nobody thought anything of it. Doubt you could do that today.

My biggest issue is that it is just not very accurate. The teachers should lock the kids in chains on an actual ship & sail around for a few weeks with no latrine & little, if any, food. If you're going to intentionally do something stupid, at least go all out.
