The only O comparison that makes a lick of sense: Clay Helton.

Several posters are trying to compare O to Saban in 2000. That doesn't work. The situations are completely different starting with the fact that Saban inherited a team that went 3-8 the year before while LSU went 7-4 and finished ranked in the top 15. One comparison that SHOULD give tiger fans at least some hope is Clay Helton
Both took over as interim coaches
Both were given the head job the next season
Both teams looked bad early in the year.
Helton started 1-3 last year before running the table and ending up winning the rose bowl. Not saying LSU finishes that strong especially with the tough games at the end of the year, but it's worth mentioning.
I didn't like the hire, still don't, but if O really did "learn a lesson," as he said after the game, maybe there's reason to believe we can finish strong. It all starts in Gainesville.

What lesson is that? Don't suck? The penalties and sloppy play have been there all year. He even admitted the team had bad practices last week too.
His big thing was he is going to let his coaches coach. So now is he going to take over? He just spits out random shite but has no plan to make anything better.

Y'all need to stop overlookin Syracuse. Dino Babers is under the Briles Raid tree, he knows how to score points

Etling will not be the first pick in the draft

Exactly Darnold saved Helton and USC, we don't have Sam. We have Danny and the gap is not a stream, it's a river and that's no knock on Etling, yet Darnold is that great.

Yes I'm bumping my own thread because the ridiculous O/Saban comparison persists. Situations are not the same at all, dammit.

Comparing O to Saban? The freaking O propaganda machine is in overdrive. Shouldn't Ed have "learned his lesson" at Ole Miss or did he just black out those memories?

Didn't O state in his show last night that he is not changing the way he coaches?
Furthermore, Helton is significantly different seeing as USC is his first ever time being a head coach, whereas this is #2 full time and #4 for Ed if you count interim stints.
O shouldn't need to be getting his bearings like Helton did.

Brady Hoke is the only real comparison

That's be a reasonable take if he'd ever won anything before.

Hoke though had at least one winning season at Ball St. and San Diego St.

Florida is the next legit SEC test. Syracuse and Troy are expected to be lesser competition, although either could rise up and surprise LSU. A clean, dominant performance by LSU against them would be nice and positive, but a solid win against Florida would go much further in showing that O really does get it. However, a loss to either Syracuse or Troy would be far worse than a loss to Florida. Scoreboard and the Rant would probably shut down.

Yeah, Hoke had a better resume beforehand so it's not exact. But it is quite close.

Etling is the problem, not the solution. He'll NEVER rise above the average and the typical.
We have Myles Brennan who's potentially the second coming of LSU football.
