The collected short stories of Edgar Allen Poe or Mark Twain are both still surprisingly good. Poe actually created the detective genre and his short story in which he did this is highly recommended. Twain has several fun stories featuring God and the devil (or man versus woman) that are also great reads.

Why would this be surprising?
