SF is incredibly expensive for a few reasons, one being the lack of new space to build (one of the reasons why NOLA is relatively expensive, but people aren't moving there in droves), it's beautiful and, yes, close to where a lot of the companies you reference are located.
It's also not the most expensive place to live in the US, as that would be Manhattan. Hell, SF is 4th, according to Kiplinger, behind the aforementioned, Sunnyvale, and Honolulu.

Sunnyvale is in the Bay Area. If you look at metro's and not individual boroughs and cities, the Bay Area ranks higher. Business Insider has 2-4 occupied by the Bay Area (if you include Santa Cruz). Though, yeah, there are boroughs, cities, and neighborhoods that are more expensive. Disclaimer: 2015 data.
