I downloaded the cbs sports app . But didn't see anything about streaming on it . Is it a free service ? Also will it show up the day of the game ?

me too. And when I've found CBS streams it's usually blacked out for my market. Very interested in this if we can get it working.
WAFB(CBS) blows Dicks on my HD Attenna and I'm 2.5 miles from downtown BR.

It's free to stream live. You have to pay for on demand content.

Not sure about football, but I've watched the golf for free before.
