I just don't see Sony having the brilliant idea before Square that this was of interest to people.

With who Sony generally is, I'm going with the buying rights once they heard about it, or making it a part of the FF XV development. Sony is super motivated to do this all of the time, and has a deep history of it.

There are 3 ways this could have happened.

1. Sony decided to throw money at Square for exclusivity.

2. Sony approached Square with the idea. Offered them money to help with producing for exclusivity.

3. Square approached Sony with wanting help to get the project off the ground. Sony gets exclusivity in the deal.

All 3 of these are plausible and happen. They are business partners.

Look at Shenmue 3, A game long awaited by fans is getting created because of the hugely successful kickstarter. But that is not the only reason, Sony's partnership is also the reason it has the funds to get made. Which is why Sony is getting an old Sega game as an exclusive.

frick everything about Sony!!! I'm not usually one to get salty about a remake or PS4 exclusive but this is HORRIBLE!!!! I played this ALL the time as a kid and have wanted it remade for years!

Why all these companies jack off to Sony is beyond me. The console itself horribly under performs on big budget games, yet gets all the big titles.

I hope this gets ported to PC. It would be a travesty to not see this classic in other platforms. If you are a PS exclusive gamer then frick you. You're part of the problem.

Agreed, but things aren't that simple. There's a lot of room in 1 and 3 for different reasons to create the situation. Heck #2, could have been Sony's pure motivation to affect the Switch in Japan and nothing else.

We don't know, and money is money, etc. Sony has been cutthroat, even recently with Minecraft, so I'd err on the side of something shady/mean-spirited more than Square developing this, running out of funds and Sony saving the day or something altruistic like that.

True, but all you're doing is proving that Sony is preying on people's nostalgia then wrapping it up in exclusivity. Shenmue, though, couldn't be on a Sega platform today, so that's a different kind of situation.
