But that is not how it happens all the time. You simply don't know how this went down.

Lots of times Sony, Microsoft or whoever will help finance the game for exclusivity. Which actively helps these games get made.

Yes Square is a huge company but without the funding from Sony they may have had no want to do this.

And you don't either, so we don't know if Square was doing this then Sony bought it. There's almost no chance that Sony came and said, "Hey, this would sell well," Square already knows this. I've wanted a remake of CT, SoM, and the FF's for years (or at least the VC's, which were so slow going on the Wii).

I just don't see Sony having the brilliant idea before Square that this was of interest to people.

With who Sony generally is, I'm going with the buying rights once they heard about it, or making it a part of the FF XV development. Sony is super motivated to do this all of the time, and has a deep history of it.

Of course it does. That doesn't make it right. In general, outside of first/second parties, I'd rather everyone enjoy video games, rather than companies putting everyone on sides, and manipulating nostalgia and experience.

If this was "New Square sort of mobile/old-school RPG," no one cares. It's different because it's SoM.

There are 3 ways this could have happened.

1. Sony decided to throw money at Square for exclusivity.

2. Sony approached Square with the idea. Offered them money to help with producing for exclusivity.

3. Square approached Sony with wanting help to get the project off the ground. Sony gets exclusivity in the deal.

All 3 of these are plausible and happen. They are business partners.

Look at Shenmue 3, A game long awaited by fans is getting created because of the hugely successful kickstarter. But that is not the only reason, Sony's partnership is also the reason it has the funds to get made. Which is why Sony is getting an old Sega game as an exclusive.
