Isn't the Museum of Science and Industry on the south side? Would that be ok?
It's not bad. It's geared more for kids than adults so be prepared. The wife and I went. Took the bus down there in the AM and walked to Salonica for brunch. Salonica was great and definitely local. The high lite of the museum is by far the coal mine. As someone who worked in the under ground mines here in Alabama, the replica that they have at the museum is about as close as you will get to the real thing. Excellent representation.
My wife and I went kid less there. We showed up on free admittance day for local residents. It was a fricking zoo.

If it's geared toward kids we may not go.
