I don't remember Nick Saban being a "Nick Saban-type guy" when he was at Michigan State--he lost FIVE or more games in 4 of his 5 five seasons there. And Bear Bryant wasn't a "Bear Bryant-type guy" when he was at Texas A&M or Kentucky (he lost/tied three games or more in 11 out of 13 seasons before going to Alabama). The point is, sometimes even great coaches need time to learn, mature, and grown into their role. They also need to "click" with the right fit at the right time. Now, I'm not saying that Coach O is a Saban or Bryant, but it's simply not true that all the great coaches are just dominant from the get-go.

I didn't say Nick Saban was great from the beginning. But Nick Saban in 2000 was a better coach than O is right now. He had to get better to be the guy he is now.

What are the odds that O can ever catch up? He doesn't have enough years in coaching left to do it. I don't think he'll ever be as good as Saban was when he was at Michigan St. He damn sure isn't going to do it in 3 years or so.
