Byrd left the Klan in the late 1940s and ran for US Senate in 1958. Duke left the Klan in 1980 and ran for LA Governor in 1991. To the media Byrd was a good decent man while Duke was an evil racist. The letter after their names is really all that is different.

Pretty much. Byrd was probably painted as "seeing the error of his ways" by his peers. Duke is looked upon as a staunch racists. TBH I cannot remember Duke denouncing his racist views though.

Byrd renounced the klan and when he served he voted to reauthorize the voting rights act, supported legislation for Hate Crimes Prevention.

David Duke still supports the klan and it's viewpoint.

If you can't see the difference is in the reformation and not just their party affiliation, then there's no hope for you

Didn't Duke win the majority of the white vote when he ran for Governor of Louisiana?

The only reason Byrd left the Klan was because it was damaging to his political aspirations. He said as much. The left just ignores that, though.

I met and spoke with Duke a while back. He seemed like a very down to earth guy regardless of his views.

I wonder if the Senate will have to rename the "Byrd Rule"?

Byrd did make this statement:

quote:

I know now I was wrong. Intolerance had no place in America. I apologized a thousand times ... and I don't mind apologizing over and over again. I can't erase what happened.

No their politics are very different.

While Byrd was every bit the racist Duke is, he eventually oversaw policies advocated by black leadership. So Byrd and Black Leaders became strange bedfellows. George Wallace and LBJ were both malignant racists. Both make my skin crawl. But they too successfully manipulated politics to cover their core beliefs. David Duke does just the opposite.

Now, one can argue economic and social positions similar to those which Duke promotes could actually serve to break a legacy of intergenerational indigence caused by LBJ's War on Poverty. But you cannot make that argument successfully if you are DavidKKKDuke.

The other issue is internal. Many of us who aren't leftists find the racism inherent in identity politics to be repugnant. So whereas most corners of the Democrat Party will overlook racism if the right palms are greased, and politically correct policies promoted, often non-democrats are not nearly so forgiving.

The irony may be thick, but it's why Duke is hurt so much more by his background than was Byrd.
