I think you improve a lot, even if your opponent is a scrub. You get all the first game jitters out of the way, and vs a scrub you can do it safely.
LSU bumbled around against teams like North Carolina in 2010, and Oregon St in 2004 as stated above. Damn lucky to win either of those games, and easily could have been losses had THEY been more ready.
By midseason we stomp either team.
