paying for land won via Conquest? Seems like a cut and dry case there.

And yet you didn't realize that Lee was publicly shamed by Lincoln's cabinet and Meigs during the war. Maybe you should read relevant things next time?

You mean you're not supposed to talk bad about your opponents while you're fighting them in a war?! No wayyyyyy!!!!! Why don't you read some post war memoirs. Where they talk highly of lee? Or how about abe talking about lee pretty war?

It's called war time propaganda. This really is embarrassingly easy. You're lack of historical knowledge is glaringly obvious. If wager the only material you've read about the Civil War was what was written in your high school history book. Not one single memoir or first hand account has been read by your ignorant arse. And it's extremely easy to see via your outlandish statements.

You should read this

Surely you know this, since you're a scholar on the subject by your own word, but Arlington was taken due to failure to pay an insurrection tax on property in person - but Lee's wife made a good faith effort to pay it. SCOTUS found that this was an unlawful taking of property, in the 1870s. The govt then bought the land back from Lee's son in order to not have to disinter the bodies and vacate the fort that were there.

Pretty cut and dry, but surely you knew that already!

You clearly said that everyone respected him. So respected, in fact, they fricked up his land in the most public way possible.
