The Democratic Party became the party of the progressives and one of its early standard bearers was William Jennings Bryan.

Teddy Roosevelt was "the Progressive" president and he was a Republican.
The left calls themselves Progressives in an attempt to rebrand the name liberal, which they named themselves years ago, because it has developed such a negative connotation based on policies they've implemented.
The only person today that espousts policies that are Progressive in line with what Teddy Roosevelt did is Marco Rubio. His ideas for education reform, student loan debt, and tax reform are truly progressive ideas. Tall might not like him around here, but admit what he suggests is a way better progressivism than the left.

He was abandoned by the Republican Party. Certainly by the time of Harding and Hoover, the GOP was pretty much then what it is now - the "Hooray for me and frick you" party.

Actually, it has been used interchangeably with "communist" since at least the 1930's.
