isn't your car an extension of your home, which is why you can carry a gun in it without a CCL?

I'll be honest, I don't know all the technicalities around self-defense laws. To me, someone breaking into your car out on the street is very much different than someone breaking into your home where your family sleeps. To me, a guy breaking into my house is an immediate and urgent threat that is not above being responded to with deadly force. If someone is breaking into my car, he's just a dick, not necessarily a threat to my safety.

ETA: As far as not needing a CCL to have a weapon in your car, I'm not entirely sure. All I know is that if you get pulled over you should tell the cop you have to avoid any misunderstandings.

In certain situations, yes. Some random guy in the car when you aren't? That's in all likeliness not good enough.
