I have a theory. Pick a university with a journalism school. Go ask 100 journalism majors why they picked journalism as a profession. I'm guessing fewer than 10% will answer "because I want to provide information to the public". The rest will be something along the lines of "because I want to make a difference", or "I want to change the world for the better", or similar. There's a sense of self-importance in journalists that's frankly unhealthy in my opinion......
