You should be fine if you're playing pick up. The biggest thing is just going to be to work hard. Don't spend too much time on the ball. Take a touch. Get your head up. Make a smart pass. I would recommend staying near the back and defending. A lot of people at pick up don't defend, and you can endear yourself to people pretty quickly if you defend admirably. If you do find yourself further up the pitch, just track back and defend when your team loses the ball. Keep it simple and you'll be fine.

As a keeper, I try to follow these rules when playing small-sided pick up games, yet I always end up playing on the wings. It's like everyone enjoys watching my out-of-shape arse try to get up and back. Don't they know my job is just to stand still?
