I mostly fish bass but I was wondering what everyone's setup was for fishing for reds in the marsh. What size rod, reel, line do you use? If you use braid, do you use a leader? If you use mono or fluoro, what size line do you go with? Trying to get ready for a trip next month. Thx

I carry 2 baitcasters and a spinning in my kayak. One with 14 lb mono for topwater and light swim baits. One with 20 or 30 lb braid for heavier lures like a spinnerbait. The spinning reel I have a popping cork with either Vudu Shrimp, jig head, gulp, etc....

Any of your medium or MH power bait casting setups will suffice. Fluorocarbon is not needed in LA 99% of the time. 30lb+ braid tied direct, or 12-15lb mono is great. Smooth drag is nice too.

30 lb braid with 4-5 ft fluoro leader. Can still cast a mile, but it's there for you if you get onto some bull reds.

I've been hearing more and more people say 13 - Inception or concept A for reds.

I redfish a couple times a year and use the 200E7s without any problems. 30# braid, no leaders, Tsunami. They are usually stacked up in deeper dead ends and will bite anything when I fish for them though.

Abu Garcia revo inshore low profile

MH Falcon redfish caster

30 pounds Braid with 4ft fluoro leader

I like lil jons and down south as the lure choice. If you haven't heard of Down South and you throw artificial, give them a look. Fantastic overall lure that many of the guides use in big lake.

Curado 200e7 and 30lb braid is all I ever use and have never had a problem. I tie directly to braid.

If you going to throw a gold spoon over grass beds use the reel you have with the fastest retrieve. You really should be burning arse pulling that thing over the grass.

I learned that from an old coonass in a flatboat with folded down Air Bourdreauxs and a flannel shirt at the dock. Me and buddy came back with 2 reds, him and his buddy had 10. We asked him what he caught them on? He said a gold spoon, we were like that's what we were throwing! He said, "yeah but let me tell ya, when you pull that thing back ya got to burn arse with it, yall go back out and try dat". So we went back out, "burned arse with it" and caught our limit.

I use a pair of concept a's, 8.1 and 7.1 ratios.... fast for spoons

I like 6.5 to 7 ft medium action on rods

30 lb power pro. 5' of 17lb flouro leader (mono sometimes)

The leader is for a variety of reasons in no particular order

Stretch - braid has none. This can be good in light/ultra light. But I need some the way I fish.

I use bright yellow braid so I can see it. I need a leader on that alone.

Saves line. From routine line changes (which add up), to busting off hangups, you are wasting good line every time.

Can also save your rig if you also tie the braid straight to the spool.

I use the same gear I use for Bass. If I'm going to be pitching jigs and soft plastics(redfish love speedcraws) in the grass I go straight 65# braid on 7'-6" Heavy rod. If I'm throwing spoons or Spinnerbaits outside the grass I use 15# mono on a 7'-3'' med rod this gives them time to eat my lure before I realize it and snatch it away. My reels are Revos for hi speeds and heavy drags. This same equipment is used everywhere I fish from Venice to Caddo.
