It sounds like your dog has a case of resource guarding. He is guarding either your wife or the bed. This can be a hard habit to break. There are several levels of guarding and charging and biting is on of the worst. The good news is you have a smaller dog and with training you can probably curb the habit. I have had a dog with similar habits and while I have it fully managed it never truly goes away. You might be able to break the habit from ever happening to you but the real problem is breaking the habit with strangers. A stranger wont know what to look for and its amazing how many people cant recognize an angry pissed off dog. Step one would be take the dog out of the bed until this is fixed and get him some training. Beating the shite out of him may break him from biting you but it wont break him from biting someone else. I struggled with getting rid of my dog but ultimately pumped a bunch of money into training an it made a big change. I do always have to worry around strangers though. A certified trainer can determine how big of a deal it is. It might be in the early stages and can be completely fixed.
