Bernard Diliberto, sports commentator in New Orleans By Associated Press | January 15, 2005 NEW ORLEANS -- Bernard ''Buddy" Diliberto, a New Orleans sports commentator who originated the tradition of fans wearing bags on their heads to lament losing teams, died Jan. 7 at his home in Metairie, said his son, Mike Diliberto. He was 73 and suffered a heart attack, his son said. Mr. Diliberto's career included stints at The Times-Picayune of New Orleans and at two New Orleans television stations before switching over to WWL-AM, where he was a commentator and sports talk show host. His shows focused mostly on the Saints and he became famous for his banter with callers and his blistering criticism of players, coaches, and front-office executives. Mr. Diliberto amused listeners with his wit, such as referring to former Saints quarterback Kenny ''The Snake" Stabler as ''Steak Snabler," and calling Saints receiver Donte Stallworth ''Donte Stallpepper." He also originated the bags that Saints fans often wear during losing streaks. Another time, during a Saints' dry spell, he did his sports report standing in front of a cemetery, suggesting that the Saints played like cadavers.
