Interstellar meets Tree of Life.

An alien flick that turns into a themed art movie 3.5 stars.

I set the bar too high, it was just better than average.

It was good, not great. Im glad I saw it, but not in a rush to see it again. It was just SO slow.

Doesn't have much in common with either of these. Maybe a little Tree of Life.

It was not great. Not bad. But not great. A movie that thought it was much more intelligent than what it actually was.

Arrival was an amazing film, and by far my favorite movie of last year. The way it gets into the messiness of communication and translation was fascinating, and at the movie's core, there is a moral choice for which the movie doesn't really take a side, giving voice to both sides of the argument. I think she's right to have a child knowing what will happen, but wrong to not tell her husband of what was going to happen, robbing him of the choice.

It's also a beautifully shot film, and the scenes on first contact are genuinely terrifying. It does a great job of showing how scary the unknown is.
