For the group:
I've not found a whole lot of use for it. I'd bet good money she responds to Amazon TV commercials five times as often as to me asking her something.
I've got the Phillips Hue bulbs in several places but the Hue app controls them well enough. They turn themselves on and off as needed. No use in asking Alexa to do what I've already programmed them to do.
I've got a Nest and a few Nest Cameras but they can also be controlled by app. Again the App controls scheduling. Haven't found any reason to ask Alexa anything except for the first few times as a novelty.
I run IFTT for about a dozen recipes. I mean it's kind of cool that the house turns blue when it rains. When football saturdays come up this house is going to be a disco of purple and gold blinking lights when LSU scores, lol. But similarly what's the purpose of A recipe that tells Hue bulbs what Hue bulbs can tell themselves? Or the same for Nests? It feels really redundant.
Similarly my phone volunteers how long it's going to take to get to work each day so traffic updates aren't needed.
What's this thing useful for?

when mine did that the other day, the wife turned to me with this weary "WTF" look on her face. she just said "why?". i said "rain" and she shot death darts at me. i couldn't help but laugh.
but to answer your question, its very useful when we're sitting at the kitchen island working on a project to yell 'alexa turn on concentrate in kitchen' or 'alexa kitchen 100%' and instantly all the lights turn blue-white or get really bright so we can see what we're doing without having to stop and chase down a phone.
when walking through the house and the lights are blazing its nice to say 'alexa hall 50%' and boom.
yes the lights are on a schedule but we all know thats too rigid many times.
also, if you don't use alexa, how do you ever change the light colors? surely you don't go looking for your phone each time you want to change the colors?
