The extermination camps were located in remote areas of Poland, with the exception of Auschwitz which was a massive labor camp with a death camp attached at Birkenau. Yes, they were remote and deliberately so.

Most of the initial killing was done by men with rifles in plain sight of anyone who cared to watch. The camps came later, and even then most of them weren't all that remote.
