At some point during the war, the average soldier probably heard rumors or knew about the mass killing of Jews in their concentration camps.

So the average soldiers at the front knew of an extermination plan that was done secretly at remote camps? Even the allies who were reading the Germans coded messages hadn't determined it was happening until the very end of the war.

The typical German soldiers didn't view themselves as bad guys at all, even after the war was over.

I'm not defending this, but they probably thought they were freeing people from Stalin's wrath - which killed far more people.

Yeah, and when they heard that they probably thought "Hell yeah!" They were fricking Nazis dude they hated jews what do you think they thought? WW2 was nothing but nonstop death and depravity you think they gave a flying shite about the concentration camps?

The soldiers already knew what was happening. The regular army divisions had attachments of volunteer soldiers who were tasked with killing Jews and other ethnic minorities. The concentration camps were hidden, but those were not the only places were German soldiers were killing people.
