So I was listening to a podcast that said to be on the lookout for Kamala Harris to be the Dem nom for 2020, and since I don't know much about her I decided to go read her platforms.

Without getting into the normal partisan spiral, I saw one slightly different gripe that really made my head hurt.

Under her education stance:

quote:

Steam for 21st Century Jobs: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) education is the key to America's future success.

What the fricking frick? Isn't the pursuit of all the BS art degrees part of the reason people are drowning in student load debt 10 years post graduate?

She continues to say:
quote:

But we are woefully underfunding art, music and creative programs to teach children to think critically and innovate.

You can't lump music in with STEM topics....

Because art majors want to feel like they're as important as STEM.

Shocker, Dem wants to subsidize students that will most likely be underemployed at best. I wonder which way the'll vote.

I just learned this a few weeks ago myself.

I was in a meeting where they mentioned this change and if you're in a Catholic school it's now STREAM- adding religion In as well.

Someone has got to have the skills to paint that multicultural nose art on the new space shuttle.

I don't see the problem. Design is needed for things to be functional. Art doesn't just refer to some guy painting in a studio. Entertainment is a multibillion dollar industry. CGI needs artists. Computer programs need UI artists. Web sites need design. Businesses need logos and branding.

Most things that are made need some level of design aesthetic to help them sell better than competing products.

I think we ARE neglecting the arts with young students (elementary and middle). However, we should not subsidize college students who are choosing arts as a major except for maybe education.

If you change the A from Arts to something like Architecture, Agriculture, or Aeronautics, it would make more sense.

That's just sad really. Bless their little hearts.

Liberals STILL don't seem to know that changing the word for a thing doesn't change what that thing is.

"Don't call them retarded because that's insulting".

Yeah. Well now, "special" is insulting.

Throwing the A in there to make people feel better doesn't change their circumstance one iota

Well about the only thing they are leaving out is history. And we know they don't want people to learn the real history of the Democratic Party, communism, and fascism. They want to rewrite history to claim the Republicans did all that.

They have a STEAM room at my kid's elementary school in Hoover. Right across from the...Art room. Makes no sense.

They did that in my town in Texas. They started building a STEM High School, now it is a STEAM High School.

Probably a bunch of butt-hurt parents mad their dumb kid would not get to go to the new pretty school.

If you focus on STEM education, there's already a place for the liberal arts. You just teach children to apply problem solving techniques to things like ELA and social studies. Adding the "A" for art is pretty much a pandering move.

Seems perfectly in line with socialist dogma.

Dilute the most important or most powerful institutions in order to bring them down to the level of those that aren't as capable or as important.

Because learning art helps at learning math and science. Creative pursuits aid in understanding abstract concepts. Learning music has been proven time and time again to improve math skills. Learning art should be a part of a STEM education, but not the goal of a STEM education.
