Alleva should have given him an ultimatum before they fired him.

He should have never made it past the A&M game.
I think he thought he was gone then, much more than he thought he was gone after the Auburn game.

Pride.

As Marcellus Wallace said "frick pride". Les would still be the coach today if he had taken that advice.

Les understood that you can't make decisions based on what the mob thinks you should do. That's how Joe Alleva hired Ed Orgeron and put the final nail in LSU football's coffin.

Unfortunately Les did not understand how to run an offense.

He had some success. Even in the end his teams were good. He's just the only one who couldn't see his teams could have/should have been better.

It's funny that you mention this query Lacour. A co-worker and myself just discussed this issue yesterday. It boggles the mind why coaches do some of the things they do. Pure stubborness I guess. If he really had done a complete wholesale change on the offense, who knows what would have happened. Also , had he at least tried Lee on that fateful night or even tried Mett , I think we as fans would have been more apt to take that loss. I don't think I've ever seen a person more stubborn than Les Miles. Anyway, glad a new chapter has begun in LSU football.

The thing that makes it a " fatal flaw" is that the person who possesses it is seemingly unable to change it. The dumbest guy in the cheap seats understood the problem. Kids in elementary school understood the problem. Your great grandmother understood the problem. Les never understood the problem.

2008 fricked up Miles' head

Miles also felt invincible after a while and knew if he just would rack off 9-10 regular season wins he was safe

he adopted a style, with our talent, that all but guaranteed that result

no point in taking risks if you don't feel you have to

You ever tried to tell a successful 60 year old how to do something? He won many games his way and wasn't going to change no matter what.

I think since we couldn't develop a QB properly, what Les saw in practice when we "opened it up", didn't give him the confidence to do it during a game. When he had decent QB play, like Flynn, Jamarcus or Mett, he threw the ball. Couple that with Jarrett Lee's UGA performance and you have the answer.

The question is why he didn't hire someone that could develop a damn QB.

Loved Les (and still do). Easily in m top 3 LSU coaches all time with Dale and Skip. I just wish he had hired a Canada type OC and finished out his career here.

At the beginning, it was because only Alabama was beating him. The last couple of years, it morphed into a paranoia of losing because of a passing offense, and outright hostility with the section of the fanbase who wanted a passing game. I still believe, in the bottom of my heart, he thought Alleva wouldn't fire him his last year and Les made it a point to give that vocal section of the fanbase the finger.

Little confidence in the QBs compared to the running game. At the end of the day, I think CLM knew the record at the end of the year was what was going to cost him his job. He would rather have LSU competitive in every game and go 8-4 at worst than allow for a ton of turnovers that are back breakers in the SEC and have a potential 5-7 year like the UGAs and Floridas have had.

That said, CLM still took a crap ton of heat the year we had Mett, OBJ, Juice, and Hill. The offense was great that year and the defense sucked. We went 9-3 and everyone was still calling for Les's head. The reality is that LSU's fan base is never satisfied and never will be. When the team jumped out to 2-2 last year, the writing was on the wall that we were probably going to have another 8-5 season at best and the call for CLM to be let go got too loud.

It's downright SAD that people are starting threads like this in July 2017.

Why don't you ever change?
Why do you keep starting shitty posts?
When will you learn?
I can see your end is near.

I was a fan of Miles as a person. Couldn't have asked for a more upstanding person. He cared about those kids. His coaching skills were not up to LSU standard. Just don't like seeing him criticized anymore. He's gone.

quote:

Why didn't Les change?

That's the equivalent of asking why a remedial student didn't change his approach to studying, or test-taking. Miles had no acumen for tactics. He didn't know how to effectively change. He wasn't intelligent enough to objectively assess his strategy and adapt. He was a recruiter and a motivator.

There's a line in a movie (The Pirates of Silicon Valley) Bill Gates says "success is a menace it convinces smart people they can't be wrong".

That fits Les to a tee. Haters may not like to admit it but he had a lot of success here. In his day 17-14 games were the norm and he'd rather win 9-6 than lose 45-42 is his mentality.
