Actually, Churchill did everything he could to preserve the Empire. That's why he kept pushing for the soft underbelly/Mediterranean strategy. He opposed the cross-Channel invasion up to the very last. George C Marshall was very suspicious of Churchill's motives and didn't want American lives lost for British colonial interests.
