I had to do them when I was at a KIPP school a few years ago. You just go to their house and introduce yourself, meet the kid usually and hopefully get the parents to see the teacher as an ally. The goal is to form a partnership with the family of the student. They aren't bad.

I'm one of the only white teachers at my school, but I see that as a positive. The kids need to be around professionals who look like them so they can see themselves as being professional someday. But having a white teacher isn't a bad thing either.

I feel you on all that.... you're doing gods work.


If I could go back and money was never an issue, I'd no doubt be a teacher to disadvantaged youths. People look at me funny for saying that but most people that know me well say that was probably my calling. I relate really well to kids.
