We don't know about the White Walkers abilities anymore than the show has told us. Hell the show has told us more since we know about their weakness to Valyrian Steel, what their origins are, and the fact that they're somewhat telekinetic. In the books we've only had 3 scenes where the Others actually appear, while we've had way more than that in the show.

I think it's a Maester thread. But the question is - is it based on anything beyond the books, the previous seasons of the show and officially released trailers and photos. I don't know the answer to that question and to be honest, I don't really want to know.
