Marcus Allen used to get fined by the NFL because he always played without knee pads. He said they were worthless as protection and hindered his running.
Tailbone pad is probably the most useful pad in football regarding the lower body...Getting knocked on your arse can't be protected by going low.
Allen also wore small and light thigh pads...thinking them just heavy wastes of time. For a great running back, shoulder pad were everything and leg pads meant nothing.
