Exotic, beautiful, regal, gallant, tempestuous, vibrant, powerful, brutish, intoxicating, erotic, fierce, majestic.

These are just a few of the words that spring to mind when one first casts his eyes upon the Mandrill.

If it looks strangely familiar, that's because it is. The mandrill was once considered a member of the baboon family but, due to its unique characteristics, was assigned its own genus, Mandrillus, as a species of monkey. But this isn't your father's monkey. With nearly 3 inch fangs, powerful shoulders and a weight of up to 130 pounds, this beast is not for the faint of heart. The mandrill is the heaviest species of monkey, packing more muscle and more power than any other member of its family.

Mandrills are found in the tropical rainforests of southern Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Congo.

These omnivorous savages will feed on anything from fruits, leaves and insects, to birds, snakes and antelope. Large prey may be killed with a bite to the nape with the mandrill's long canines. These regal ruffians have also been known to engage in violent showdowns with Gaboon vipers, leopards, and Africa's largest snake, the African rock python.

The mandrill is considered vulnerable and is affected by deforestation.

Charles Darwin wrote in The Descent of Man that "no other member in the whole class of mammals is coloured in so extraordinary a manner as the adult male mandrill's."

Join me in celebrating the mandrill.

I, for one, still consider it a member of the baboon family.

Understatement here.

We got one at the zoo years ago. He wasn't that big but I have no doubt he would annihilate me in about 10 seconds if given the chance.
