What do you mean by defeats the purpose? She was trying to do hang out with these kids, whether for publicity or genuine sympathy that was her purpose.
People use simple safety precautions for things all the time, doesn't mean they shouldn't be doing what they are doing.
It's like wearing a helmet when riding a bike. Doesn't mean you shouldn't be doing it in the first place just because you are taking extra steps to protect yourself
ETA: if you meant specifically eating my bad. But she might have been wearing gloves regardless

What do you mean by defeats the purpose?
On the other hand, she may have a legitimate phobia or OCD, and since those grounded in irrational fears or compulsions, then it irrational and counterproductive behavior shouldn't be too surprising.

If you're wearing gloves, you should not be eating or drinking in that environment.
