I haven't owned a watch in nearly 20 years and I'm looking to get one. I just don't know what are good options within the $200-$300 range.

I mean this with all sincerity - there are no "quality" watch options in the $200-$300 range. A solid quartz option like the G-shock is fine, but don't waste your money on a mechanical watch in that price range.

ETA: Alternatively, you can just buy a watch because you like the way it looks in that range.

There are solid watches in that range. You can even get watches with sapphire crystals for a little over $300. Yes, they aren't as quality as a watch for $2000, but that's why it costs less. Shoot. A seiko 5 for like $60 is pretty good for what it is. I hear they even keep pretty good time. It just isn't worth actually getting service work done on it, unless you have sentimental attachment for it.
