I was about to say the same thing. I think when they no longer had Martin's writing to fall back on, they stumbled a bit. But they did figure it out and came back really strong last season.

They also had the sense to get off Dorne. Look at the ratings for Dorne episodes. They saw the same thing you did.

Martin didn't introduce Dorne until late so they had no real sense of where to go with it.
