I think your title is a bit misleading in what the article is saying. Basically, like anything in life, you need to research it before jumping in. I believe overall it is probably a net positive for young people to be involved in struggling parts of the world. Yes, much of it is self serving, but that in and of itself doesn't make it bad. Many things in life that are self serving can have a positive impact on society. It's not mutually exclusive.
