Yeah that's what they were talking about.

What's wrong with accelerating when the guy ahead of you has an issue?

And what does "try something" mean?

I truly have no clue what goes on in a bike race. I feel like it should be the most straight forward event...ever

It's just an "unwritten rule" some people have issue with. The argument is, beat your man straight up.

He's only a few a seconds behind. He needs to pick his spot when to attack Froome, otherwise he may "blow his wad" and cost himself.
The separation between the GC contenders happen on mountain stages and time trials. Stages like today are for the sprinters.

That's what a time trial is for. You're on your own on the road.
There's a lot of strategy that goes into winning this thing
