I think you're missing the key point in that Sully actually has a track record to point to when telling recruits that he can improve their draft status.

Jonathon Crawford - #137
AJ Puk - #23
Dane Dunning - #223
Alex Faedo - #78
Then you've got Karsten Whitson, drafted 9th overall, who came to campus and left 4 years later in the 11th round.
As for LSU:
Ranaudo - #57
Gausman - #17
Nola - #90
Lange - #134
Sullivan is certainly elite at getting great pitchers and improving them. LSU holds their own in that regard, but they're not getting guys from the 200s into the 1st round.
