Anyone have any experience training and/or racing CX? I've raced XC, but want to switch it up a little and am thinking CX might be the way. Does anyone have any suggestions on an affordable <$1000 CX bike that can also be used as a commuter? TIA

Try bikesdirect.com

I have 2 bikes from them, same components as the name brands. All frames under $3000 outsourced by the name brands and probably come from the same factory.

I was looking for some sub $1k cyclocross bikes and didn't really see any before I got distracted. You could get a hybrid but they're not really built for racing like all the cyclocross bikes are.

Or you could look for a used one on craigslist. A lot of people buy bikes, ride them once, and sell them a year later for 1/3 the price.

A lot of them seem to think they need brand new tires because they let it sit and the air leaked out of the tubes.

You could probably find a used Specialized CruX on ebay for less than 1k. Otherwise you are SOL brand new.

I would suggest spending a little more money and get a Kona Private Jake.

I have a Redline Conquest Sport. Think I paid $650 a few years back. You won't get top of the line components, obviously, but it'll get you started in the mud.

I bought a Trek Cross-Rip from Capitol City Cyclery for around $800. I love it.
